The Divine Artist
creatorsartItalian (Florentine)
"I give my soul to God, my body to the earth, my worldly goods to my nearest of kin."
β€” Giorgio Vasari, Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects (1568)

Michelangelo died in Rome, surrounded by his doctor, friends, and servants. He was fully conscious and dictated these words as he felt his life ending.

Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. His works include the David, the PietΓ , the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and the dome of St. Peter's Basilica.

"The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark."
"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."
"Judge not by what is seen, but by what is felt."
"Ancora imparo (I am still learning)."
The divine nature of artistic creation
The perfection of the human form as a reflection of divine beauty
Neoplatonism: the soul's longing to return to its divine source
The superiority of sculpture over painting

Michelangelo died on February 18, 1564, at the age of 88, in Rome. He passed away after a brief illness. His body was smuggled to Florence and buried in the Basilica of Santa Croce.

"The quintessential Renaissance man, Michelangelo's masterpieces in sculpture, painting, and architecture define the very pinnacle of human artistic achievement."
