121–180 AD

Marcus Aurelius

The Stoic Emperor
philosophersphilosophyRoman
"Go to the rising sun, for I am already setting. Why do you weep for me, and not think rather of the pestilence and the death of all?"
β€” Historical accounts (Historia Augusta)

Spoken to his grieving friends and soldiers on his deathbed as he lay dying of the Antonine Plague in Vindobona. He remained a stoic to his final breath.

A Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher who ruled Rome during its peak, and author of the private journal 'Meditations', one of the greatest Stoic texts.

"You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."
"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts."
"Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one."
Everything is temporary; we must accept mortality and change with absolute serenity.
A person's character is defined by their actions and duties, not their titles or wealth.
We are all part of a larger rational universe (Cosmopolis) and must work for the common good.

He died of the plague on March 17, 180 AD, in Vindobona (modern Vienna), leaving his empire in Stoic peace. His journal 'Meditations' was never intended for publication but survived to inspire humanity.

"He ruled the Western world with absolute power, yet conquered his own mind first, leaving us the ultimate manual for Stoic resilience."
