Swami Vivekananda

The Monk Who Brought Vedanta to the West

"Do not disturb me. Let me meditate... Shivoham!"
β€” The Life of Swami Vivekananda by Eastern and Western Disciples (Advaita Ashrama)

Swami Vivekananda spent the final hours of his life in deep meditation at Belur Math. He requested to be left undisturbed, uttered the sacred mantra 'Shivoham', and silently breathed his last, attaining Mahasamadhi.

Swami Vivekananda was the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and a key figure in introducing Hindu philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. His famous 1893 speech at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago put India and its spiritual heritage on the global map.

"Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached."
"In a conflict between the heart and the brain, follow your heart."
"You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself."
"The greatest religion is to be true to your own nature. Have faith in yourselves!"
All power is within you; you can do anything and everything.
Religion is the manifestation of the divinity already in man.
Service to man is service to God.
Strength is life, weakness is death.

Swami Vivekananda died on July 4, 1902, at the young age of 39, while in a state of deep meditation (Mahasamadhi) at Belur Math in West Bengal. He entered a profound trance and his body gave way.

"The spiritual ambassador who awakened the world to the universal truths of Hindu philosophy and inspired a generation of Indians to rediscover their cultural and spiritual heritage."
