"I never thought I'd make it to 70. I'm grateful."
β€” Reported by his son, filmmaker Sandip Ray

Ray was hospitalized in Calcutta with severe heart complications. He remained conscious and in good spirits, expressing gratitude for his creative life just before succumbing to his illness.

Satyajit Ray is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century. His debut 'Pather Panchali' (1955) and the Apu Trilogy brought Indian cinema to global prominence. He received an Academy Honorary Award in 1992.

"I am a director. I am a man who loves to tell stories."
"The best and most universal stories come from your own backyard."
"Cinema is a very powerful medium. It can create a fantasy world completely."
"Emancipation is the aim of all art."
Humanist realism over melodrama
Authenticity in casting and location
Power of restraint and subtlety in storytelling
Rationalism and scientific temper

Satyajit Ray died on April 23, 1992, in Kolkata at age 70 from heart disease. His death marked the end of an era in Indian cinema.

"Ray elevated Indian cinema to the world stage with deeply humanist and masterful films, influencing generations of filmmakers globally."
