Milkha Singh

The Flying Sikh

"I want to see India fit and healthy, running towards a golden future."
β€” Multiple news reports covering his final video message (The Hindu, Indian Express, PTI)

Shortly before his passing due to COVID-19, Milkha Singh recorded a final message urging people to stay safe and get vaccinated. He expressed his undying love for the country and his desire for a healthy, prosperous India.

Milkha Singh overcame the trauma of the Partition to become one of India's greatest track athletes. He won gold at the 1958 Commonwealth Games and set national records that stood for decades.

"I run for my country, not for myself."
"The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep running."
"If you have no goal in life, you are as good as dead."
"I was not running for a medal, I was running for the pride of 350 million Indians."
Never give up, no matter the obstacles in your path.
Discipline and hard work are the only paths to true excellence.
Representing your country is the greatest honor an athlete can have.
Success is born directly from struggle and sacrifice.

Died on June 18, 2021, in Chandigarh from complications of COVID-19. His wife, former volleyball captain Nirmal Saini, passed away just days earlier from the same illness.

"The man who put Indian athletics on the world map, racing against history itself."
