Mahatma Gandhi

Father of the Nation

"Hey Ram"
— Witness accounts of his assassination at Birla House, New Delhi, January 30, 1948

As Nathuram Godse fired three bullets into his chest at a prayer meeting, Gandhi's hands came together in a gesture of forgiveness. He died instantly with the name of God upon his lips.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. He pioneered Satyagraha — nonviolent civil disobedience — which became a blueprint for civil rights movements worldwide and earned him the title 'Mahatma'.

"Be the change that you wish to see in the world."
"An eye for an eye will leave the whole world blind."
"Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will."
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
Ahimsa (Non-violence) as the highest moral principle
Satyagraha (Truth-force) as a method of change
Swaraj (Self-rule) for individuals and nations
Simple living and self-reliance

Gandhi was assassinated by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948, during a prayer meeting in New Delhi. His last gesture was one of forgiveness.

"The most influential pioneer of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi remains a global moral compass for peace and justice."
