Julius Caesar

The Dictator of Rome
philosophersancient-rulersRoman
"The famous 'Et tu, Brute?' is apocryphal (Shakespearean). Suetonius reports he said nothing or muttered 'Kai su, teknon?' ('You too, child?') in Greek. Plutarch states he pulled his toga over his head in silence."
β€” Suetonius, The Twelve Caesars; Plutarch, Life of Caesar

On March 15, 44 BCE (the Ides of March), Caesar was stabbed 23 times by a group of Roman senators led by Brutus and Cassius in the Theatre of Pompey.

Roman military general, statesman, and historian who played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. He conquered Gaul and was declared Dictator perpetuo.

"Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once."
"As a rule, men worry more about what they can't see than about what they can."
"Veni, vidi, vici."
"The die is cast."
Fortune favors the bold.
I came, I saw, I conquered.
Men willingly believe what they wish.
It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.

Assassinated on the Ides of March (March 15), 44 BCE, at the Theatre of Pompey in Rome. He was stabbed 23 times by a cabal of senators and died at the age of 55.

"The military genius and political titan whose ambition and assassination sealed the end of the Roman Republic and the birth of the Roman Empire."
