Father of the Indian Nuclear Program

"No specific last words recorded β€” died instantly in the Air India Flight 101 crash."
β€” Official inquiry into Air India Flight 101 crash / Biographies of Homi Bhabha

Dr. Bhabha was aboard Air India Flight 101 on his way to a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. The flight crashed into Mont Blanc in bad weather, killing all on board.

Dr. Homi J. Bhabha was the visionary architect of India's nuclear energy and weapons program. He founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), shaping India's scientific infrastructure and propelling it into the atomic age.

"The pursuit of science has often been compared to the scaling of mountains, high and difficult, yet presenting ever new vistas and opening new paths."
"It is our duty to work for the betterment of our country through science."
"The future of India is in the hands of its scientists."
"We must have the capability to harness the atom for peace, or risk being left behind forever."
India must develop her own nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
A scientist must be allowed to pursue knowledge freely, unencumbered by national boundaries.
The development of science is the key to the future of India.
Atomic energy is not merely a source of power, but a means of ushering in a new age of prosperity.

Dr. Bhabha died on January 24, 1966, at the age of 56, in the crash of Air India Flight 101 over Mont Blanc, Switzerland. His untimely death is widely considered a great loss to Indian science.

"The Father of the Indian Nuclear Program who laid the scientific foundation for India's status as a nuclear power."
