Hayao Miyazaki

The Weaver of Dreams and Wind
creatorsanimationJapanese
"I believe that children's souls are the inheritors of historical memory from previous generations. It's just that as they grow older and experience the everyday world that memory sinks lower and lower. I feel I need to make a film that reaches down to that level. If I could do that, I would die happy."
β€” The Guardian Interview, 2005

Spoken during a reflective interview discussing his creative vision, the themes of childhood and aging, and how his films try to connect children to the deep, forgotten ancestral memories of wonder and existence.

Hayao Miyazaki is a legendary Japanese animator, filmmaker, and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, widely regarded as one of the greatest directors in cinema history. His works are characterized by hand-drawn artistic brilliance, immersive storytelling, and a deep reverence for nature and flight. Over a career spanning six decades, he directed international masterpieces such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. His storytelling persistently champions pacifism, environmental stewardship, and the resilience of children in a complex world.

"Yet, even amidst the hatred and carnage, life is still worth living. It is possible for wonderful encounters and beautiful things to exist."
"Almost all Japanese animation is produced with hardly any basis taken from observing real people, you know. It's produced by humans who can't stand looking at other humans."
"We depict hatred, but it is to depict that there are more important things. We depict a curse, to depict the joy of liberation."
Animation must be grounded in the careful, empathetic observation of real life and human behavior, rather than self-referential tropes. Hand-drawn animation possesses a unique warmth and soul that digital tools cannot replicate, serving as a direct connection from the animator's heart to the viewer's imagination.
Humanity is not separate from or superior to nature, but deeply interconnected with it, and our modern industrial greed threatens to destroy this fragile balance. True wisdom lies in coexisting with the natural world, respecting its spirits, and acknowledging that the Earth does not belong to us.
Children possess a pure, intuitive understanding of existence and historical memory that adults lose as they conform to the everyday world. Art should respect their intelligence, nurture their sense of wonder, and prepare them to face a complex, unblessed world with courage, empathy, and resilience.

Active legend. Though he has announced retirement several times, his passion for animation continually draws him back to the drawing board. He continues to create at Studio Ghibli, leaving an unmatched artistic legacy that stands as a testament to the power of hand-drawn animation and the beauty of human imagination.

"He drew his dreams onto celluloid, catching the wind in his sails and teaching the world to see the hidden magic in everyday life."
